Department of Pathology

In collaboration with Jackson Orem, director of the Uganda Cancer Institute, Suzanne Turner of the Department of Pathology and colleagues in Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and the USA have written an article on the challenges faced in treating blood cancers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This work was commissioned by the journal Lancet Haematology as part of their review series on haematological care in Sub-Saharan Africa which was launched online on the 2nd September 2021. In this article, the authors outline the excellent progress that has been made in East Africa whereby national cancer care centres have been developed and implemented. However, the continuing disparities in cancer care in comparison to high income countries is also highlighted, a gap that could be filled through continuing excellent collaborations between low and high income settings if resources are provided by overseas development aid programmes of the latter.
