Naturally occuring immunoglobulins have identical heavy chains and light chains giving rise to multiple binding sites with identical specificities for antigen. For example an IgG molecule as shown here has two identical heavy and two identical light chains. So that this structure can be clearly seen the model shown here uses two different shades of blue to distinguish the heavy chains whilst the light chains are green. Antibodies have a pseudo-2 fold axis of rotational symmetry about the vertical y axis in these models. There is a conserved glycosylation site in the CH2 domain of IgG and the carbohydrate is shown in this model in red and orange. Only some of the sugar residues are resolved in the crystal structure and the glycosylation is complex so the oligosaccharides on each heavy chain may be different.
