Options for MVST students
A deeper treatment of two of the major topics of the core curriculum is given in two of the Options available for MVST students: Tumour Biology, and Infectious Disease in Animals and Man. The Tumour Biology Option is run entirely by members of the Department of Pathology, and members of the Department contribute to Infectious Disease in Animals and Man.
Tumour Biology
The aims of this Option are to build upon and substantiate knowledge gained in the Biology of Disease course so that students will acquire a deeper understanding of important aspects of tumour biology. The course will involve lectures and seminar sessions at which students will make presentations of assigned published papers. The assigned papers and seminar sessions will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the transferable skills of data analysis, succinct expression and intellectual teamwork.

Infectious Diseases and Host Pathogen Interactions
The aim of this course is to extend students’ understanding of infectious disease processes through consideration of the interaction between a variety of infectious organisms and host defences. There is a particular focus on current, topical areas in Virology, Microbiology and Parasitology that impact on human health, often on a global scale. The course will highlight the threat posed by novel and emerging infectious agents and strategies used for eradication, control and treatment. This course in infectious disease will be attended by all NST students that elected to take the Pathology IB course, as well as those MVST students who chose it as one of their IB Options.
