MRC: New investigator research grant

Deadlines:

·       Molecular and Cellular Medicine: 20 January 2010, 28 April 2010, and 1 September 2010

·       Infections and Immunity: 27 January 2010, 5 May 2010, and 8 September 2010

The grant is aimed at talented early-career scientists, who are capable of becoming principal investigators, and who are now ready to take the next step towards that goal; the scheme can provide them with a route into a permanent academic position.  For those who already have a post it provides funding and ‘protected time’ with which to establish an independent research career. A New Research Investigator Grant is also a potential source of research funding for fellows whose awards only cover a personal salary.

Eligibility: Applicants must be

·       based at a UK institution and hold a PhD, DPhil or an MD

·       at the start of their first academic appointment or be in a senior post-doctoral position and have between three and ten years post qualification research experience

Further eligibility criteria are in the New Investigator Research Grant Annex at http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Utilities/Documentrecord/index.htm?d=MRC003270 .

Those who do not hold a permanent academic post, will be required to provide a written confirmation from the research organisation that it would seriously consider the applicant for a permanent position during the lifetime of the award.

Funding: The grant is normally for three years; the maximum amount of funding that can be applied for is £600,000.  The MRC will usually meet up to 80 per cent of the full economic cost.

Application procedure: completed proposal must be submitted through the MRC’s electronic application and assessment (EAA) system by 4 pm on the relevant research board's deadline date (details at http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Fundingopportunities/Deadlines/index.htm ).

Please note that all proposals must include the original signed and scanned copy of the Statement of Support which should be attached as a PDF file to the EAA Application. The Statement should be signed by the Head of Department and be counter-signed by the Vice Chancellor via Gaynor Hollander, Research Support Manager x65193, orl gaynor.hollander@admin.cam.ac.uk and allow 10 working days..
