Grantsmanship Series – Action Learning Sets (GALS) for aspiring, new or returning PIs.

Taking place on Monday lunch-times in Peterhouse, these action learning sets are a new opportunity to support staff interested in applying for external funding.  For just one hour of your time per week, you can ensure that you get an application put together and get expert peer review prior to submission.

Week 1 – Identify your target funder, outline your ideas, defining your key needs

Week 2 – Costing your grant – Cambridge Research Office

Week 3 – Research and economic impact of your work

Week 4 – Presentation for initial review – lead academic and peer review panel

Week 5 – 8 Writing (facilitated support available)

Week 9 -10 Internal peer review – peer review panel, 1:1 or plenary feedback, as preferred

Resource management for PIs - December 2nd 2009 11-1 Seminar room, Pathology, Downing Site.

For new and established grant holders or anyone responsible for managing the resources of an award.

Topics include:

  • How soon is your funding available
  • Financial responsibilities of the PI
  • How to interpret CUFS reports, including commitment purchasing
  • Case studies on CUFS

Business skills for PIs - 27th November 2009, 11.00–13.00 or 7th March 2010, 11-13.00  Disability Resource Centre, Trumpington Street.

If you are interested in the possibility of spinning a company come and learn the basics involved and how to meet the right people.

Topics will include:

  • How to assess your IP position
  • How to write a business plan
  • What are the ten key things you need to know how to do to run a business
  • How to have an opportunity to meet investors and how to prepare to meet investors

Committee Skills for PIs 10 December 2009, 11.00–14.00 or 10 March 2010, 11.00–14.00in Peterhouse

In this activity-based workshop, there is an opportunity to watch video-based material on committee member’s behaviours and their outcomes plus extra time slots to experience role play of different committee-based scenarios.

Topics include:

·                 Identify problems caused in meetings

·                 Learn how to improve your contribution

·                 Recognize different styles

·                 Devise an action plan to improve your future contributions

Leading your research team - 12 November 2009, 10.00–16.00 or 4 March 2010, 10.00–16.00 Hughes Hall

This workshop is suitable for anyone who is responsible for / has delegated responsibility for others working on a grant.This activity-based workshop helps you develop the essential skills and knowledge to lead an effective and efficient team who will deliver your research outputs on target. A prestigious guest speaker will provide insight on successful leadership from the world of industry

Overview of research project management – 25th November, 2009 10.00-16.00 ( Hughes Hall) and 14th April, 2010 10.00-16.00 (Peterhouse)

For anyone who holds or is intending to hold a research grant. Applying essential project management tools to a research context this practical workshop outlines strategies to juggle time, budget and resources. The key skills to complete your research project on time and on budget.
