PhD Studentship in virus:host interactions

graham-studentship-1Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship position funded by the Department of Pathology to start from January 2018.  Funding will cover the student's stipend at the current Research Council rate and University Fees. The studentship is only available to UK nationals and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements*.

graham-studentship-2The successful candidate will join Dr Stephen Graham’s laboratory to investigate the mechanisms by which viruses modify cellular membranes during infection. Our lab has recently identified a number of novel interactions between herpesvirus proteins and cellular factors that modulate host-cell membrane composition and the trafficking of cellular membrane proteins. This project aims to define the molecular basis of these interactions and their contribution to virus infection. This will be achieved by combining structural, biochemical and cell biology techniques including: atomic-resolution structures of the herpesvirus proteins alone and in complexes with their cellular partners, biophysics to define the molecular details such protein:protein interactions, fluorescence microscopy to localise these complexes within cells, and production of recombinant viruses to the function of these proteins during virus infection. The successful applicant will join a vibrant multidisciplinary research team that aims to provide the underpinning science for the next generation of therapeutic agents. Further details of our lab can be found at http://groups.ds.cam.ac.uk/struvir/

graham-studentship-3Candidates should have a first or upper second class degree in biochemistry, cell biology or biological/medical science and should possess excellent written and oral communication skills. The post-holder should be highly motivated and able to work as part of a team. The Department requires that by the time of interview all potential students must have fulfilled the language requirements for admission (http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/blpapdpth/requirements).

** Further information about the UK residency requirements and your fee status can be found at the following website: http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/finance/fees/what-my-fee-status . Applications from ineligible candidates will not be considered.
